Name: Brandy Machado
Concentration(s): Government and Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality
Hello! My name is Brandy. I am originally from Lompoc, CA, which was mentioned on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air one time and is famous for its prison, air force base, and flowers. I joined Radcliffe my freshman year after I decided that soccer and quidditch did not quite satisfy my growing desire to tackle people. I like long walks on the beach and romantic candlelight dinners—oh sorry, wrong kind of bio. When I am not playing rugby, I enjoy trying to incorporate rugby into my coursework (junior paper ftw!), skateboarding, hiking, and bike riding.
Name: Gracie Hurley
Concentration: Social Studies, with a focus on American Politics and Agricultural Policy
Position: 2nd Row
Hey y’all! I am a proud Midwesterner, raised on a farm in the middle-of-nowhere southern Ohio. I fondly remember Anna Kam walked up to me and said “You look like you could hit someone, want to play rugby?” Radcliffe was my first family at Harvard, and is still my favorite group to hang out with on a Thursday night. When I’m not playing rugby, I can be found steaming milk and pulling espresso shots at 2 cafes on campus, ushering at Sanders Theater, singing and dancing in musical theater, (but not doing them well), hanging out with HCFA, or planning events for my dearest Pforzheimer House. I hope to bring rugby back to the Midwest after graduation and develop some hearty corn-fed forwards for Radcliffe in the future!
Hi! I’m Nida, and I’m a junior from the exotic and distant city of Boston. Even though tackling people went against any and all of my natural instincts, I decided to join the team this fall, and now I really wish I had joined sooner! When I am not playing rugby, you can find me doing neurobiology research, taking photographs, or watching too much tv.
Name: Angela Song
Concentration: Human Development and Regenerative Biology (Secondary in Global Health and Health Policy)
Hi! I started playing rugby this year as a junior and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I’m from Houston so all this winter nonsense is ridiculous unless there’s snugby and/or hot chocolate involved. I’m quite clumsy and pre-rugby I was already used to many self-inflicted bruises. You also probably shouldn’t let me near your kitchen (see previous), but I’m a very good eater.
Name: Ali Haber
Concentration: Neurobiology (Mind, Brain, and Behavior track)
Position: Multipurpose Forward
Hi! I’m Ali, from right around the corner – Newton, MA. I’m proud to serve as one of our captains, as Radcliffe has been a constant part of my college life from the very beginning when I first got the wacky idea to try rugby. I think I used to a be a flanker, but my apparently versatile size has led me to play literally every position in the scrum over the past five semesters. Outside of rugby, I sing, build houses with Habitat for Humanity, and rave about both Kirkland house and cheese.
Name: Helen Clark
Concentration: Social Anthropology and Women Gender and Sexuality Joint Concentrator
Better known as Steve, Helen divides her time between playing rugby and explaining her nickname. Her passion for Georgia Bulldawgs football led her to join rugby, and she loves being a part of her warm, close-knit Radcliffe family. Steve is also a FOP leader and Consent, Assault Awareness, and Relationship Educator on campus. In her spare time she enjoys baking, singing Beyonce, painting, and being a minor Twitter personality. Born and raised in Woodbine, Georgia, she’s one of those feminists who secretly loves dirty rap music.
Name: Lenica J. Morales-Valenzuela
Concentration: Hispanic Studies (Secondary: Archaeology)
Howdy, I’m Lenni. I’m a Guatemalan born in Long Beach, CA but raised in Rockwall, TX. I’ve been with the team since my freshman year, but I originally belonged to the class of 2014, so I got to experience winning a National Championship with my Radcliffe family. After a year away, I came back, ready to win more gold and take part in the transition to Varsity. During my freetime, I like to be a cowgirl (my job during my time away), riding, bird watching and reading comic books.
Name: Lanya Olmsted
Concentration: Human Evolutionary Biology? Sociology? Psychology? Unsure …
Hello! My name is Lanya, and I just started playing rugby this semester. I absolutely love everything about Radcliffe Rugby — the badass team, the coaches, the games, team bonding, and being a prop! I am originally from Gainesville, Florida, and used to be a swimmer. This is my first time doing a land sport, and I am loving it! I am still trying to figure out my academic interests, but some things I know I do like are — bruises, working with middle schoolers, massages, cleaning obsessively, and eating all kinds of ethnic foods.
Name: Madison Singell
Hi there!!! I’m Madison, but everyone calls me Brave (my curly red hair might resemble the movie)! I’ve played soccer my whole life, but I just started playing rugby this spring and can’t believe I never knew how amazing rugby is! Radcliffe rugby is the best team I’ve ever been on, there is so much support, such a general love for the sport, and a commitment to help everyone learn! Add on to that tackling, rucking, and and the best team dynamic ever and yay, Radcliffe magic! When I’m not on the pitch, I’m probably helping out at Harvard’s newspaper, learning a new language or playing ukulele.
Name: Meghan Laughner
Hi, I’m Meghan! I was raised on a small family farm in Western Pennsylvania, and I just started playing for Radcliffe this semester. Not joining Radcliffe sooner is shaping up to be my biggest regret of college. Outside of Rad, I love people, the color yellow (because it is the happiest color), applesauce on vegetables, and Arabic.
Name: Jaimie McFarlin
Class: Law School ’15
I’m Jaimie, an ex-basketball playing, beer-loving, New Yorker. I went to Washington University in St. Louis for undergrad/grad school, took a couple years off, lived abroad (Copenhagen), and started law school. When not watching the All Blacks on youtube during classes, I enjoy reading a good Grisham book or crying to an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. I joined rugby after trying a couple other club sports and decided I couldn’t pass up hitting people for fun. Loving my Radcliffe girls!
Name: Ann-Marie Barrett
Concentration: Possibly Visual and Environmental Studies, Psychology, or Scandinavian Studies
Hi! I’m Ann-Marie. I’ve lived all around the country, but most recently hail from Michigan (the mitten, not the UP). Much to the dismay of some family and friends (sorry, Mom), I started playing rugby this spring and quickly realized that it was the best decision I have made since coming to college. The family spirit that comes from the Radcliffe team can’t be found anywhere else. If I am not with these girls, I can always be found lurking behind a camera, eating everything in the dining halls, or squeezing under any patch of sunlight that I can find.
Name: Deborah Montes
Concentration: probably Organismic & Evolutionary Bio, secondary in Visual & Environmental Studies
Hello! My name is Deborah, or Deb, and I am from Durham, North Carolina. I played many sports in high school, including track, cross country, volleyball and swimming, and when I came to Harvard in the fall I quickly realized how much I missed athletics and being part of a team. So this spring, I joined Radcliffe Rugby as a rookie and it’s probably been the best choice I’ve made since coming to college! I love training and playing with these awesome girls! Outside of rugby, I love drawing and making things, studying/playing/being with animals, being outside, and listening to music.
Name: Ekaterina Tchebotareva
Concentration: Social Studies, secondary in Economics
Hiya, I’m Ekaterina, or Kat, or Ekat, or (as Mel, our forwards’ coach, referred to me before she could remember my name) ‘Canada 2’. I’m originally from Russia but moved to Toronto, Canada when I was 5. This is my fifth year playing rugby, and I love the sport even more than I love the cold, poutine, and Celsius 🙂 Going into first semester, I didn’t think I had the time to be on a sports team but I really underestimated how much I would miss being an athlete. I’m SO happy I found ‘Black Pack’ come spring term, and feel so lucky to have become a part of this Radcliffe family. These girls are as warm and welcoming as they are fierce (naturally, the Beyonce kind), and the solidarity I feel when I’m out on the pitch with the Rad ladies is unlike anything I could put into words.
Name: Moiya “Mo” McTier
Concentration: Astrophysics (Secondary in Folklore & Mythology)
Hey! My name’s Moiya but people on the team call me Mo. I was born in Pittsburgh, PA but for the last 11 years I’ve lived in a tiny little town called Waynesburg, PA that’s full of farms and country music. I joined Radcliffe because a vet on the team told me how amazing all of the other players are, both on and off the pitch, and she was definitely right! After the first practice, I fell in love, and it wasn’t long before Rad Rugby was one of the only things I ever talked about. Outside of Rugby, I spend most of my time sleeping (but only at really inappropriate times) and eating absurd amounts of chocolate with my roommates.
