Radcliffe begins the year strong in a horse barn by winning 1st place at UNH 7’s. During Spring Break, the team enjoys good weather and competition in Tennessee and Georgia, only to return to the Northeast for the epically horrible weather at Cornell for the Ivy League Tournament where the team places 4th. Rad later captures 2nd Place at Beast of the East and 1st at Beanpot for the 4th year in a row. In the fall, Radcliffe finishes the regular season at 3-2 but revs up in post-season play by beating Amherst, upsetting UMass with overtime penalty kicks, and earning second place in New England Division I, but eventually falls to a powerful Vassar squad in the Northeast Playoffs. At the season’s end, Mary Dixey steps down as Backs Coach as she prepares to move to Connecticut, where she resumes coaching at whatever that school in New Haven is called. Fall 2002 also marks Radcliffe Rugby’s 20th Anniversary. Kate Greenthal ’03 and Kelly Seary ’01 organize the RRFC 20th Reunion, held Harvard-Yale Weekend in Cambridge and attended by ruggers from the classes of 1983 to 2006.

Patty Connell steps into the Backs Coach position, bringing much experience and expertise. Radcliffe competes against strong women’s club teams in Los Angeles and San Diego on Spring Break and then places 3rd at the Ivy League Tournament held at Yale. For the 5th year in a row, RRFC captures Beanpot. Teri Kleinberg ’03, Kate Greenthal ’03, Steph Sherman ’05, Jenny Davis ’06, and Emily Riehl ’06 play for the New England Under 23 Select-Side, and Kate advances to the Northeast Under-23 Team. Radcliffe plays well during the fall, losing only to Dartmouth and Sweet 16s-bound Brown in a very close match. Though the team with its many seniors has high hopes for post-season, the team disappointedly loses to Williams 0-5 in the New England playoffs.

After months indoors, RRFC has a rough start to their spring season playing Stanford and Berkeley over spring break. The next weekend yields a 4th place finish at Ivies after close losses to Dartmouth and Princeton . At Beast of the East after an upset loss to Amherst , Radcliffe finally turns things around beginning a 7 game winning streak that will round out the rest of the season with big wins over BC, Wesleyen, and BU. RRFC wins the Beanpot Championship yet again, defeating an improving BU squad in the finals The final regular season victory is the sweetest, a 37-0 win by a-side over rival Williams followed by a 27-0 b-side win (for b-side, this was the end of a 4-0 season). Radcliffe gets invited to her first prom dress game with Brown and wins both in tries and in fashion. With a tougher fall schedule due to NERFU changes, RRFC comes out firing with wins over Williams, Brown, Amherst , and Dartmouth and a close 20-15 loss to UMass. In a hard fought, multiple comeback 20-14 victory over Army, Radcliffe earns her first spot in the NRU championships in several years. After a 5-0 loss to Vassar at NRUs, Radcliffe pulls it together and scores enough points in a win over Cornell to qualify in the 2nd spot to Sweet Sixteens in April. Rebecca Dizon-Ross ’04, Sarah Kleinschmidt ’05, Aidan Madigan-Curtis ’07, and Emily Riehl ’06 attend the NERFU U-23 tryouts and are selected for the team. Casey Cormier ’05 is selected as a 2nd team All American.
